Abstract Antimicrobial peptides distribute in a wide variety of organisms and show the multiple biological functions including broad-spectrum antibacterial, immune- modulating and inhibiting tumor activity, as well as exhibiting unique mechanism, which made antibacterial peptides become a research focus in the field of gene engineering. It was reviewed on advances of general properties and gene engineering research of antimicrobial peptides; And their transgenic expression strategy and theoretical foundation were also discussed.
