Abstract  The amount of viable biomass is an important physiological parameter, which is correlated with the cell growth, metabolism and productivity in fermentations. Biomass Monitor is becoming an established tool for monitoring the capacitance to evaluate the concentration of viable biomass in the cell suspension. In this paper, the principle of the Biomass Monitor and the application in the Pichi fermentation is described. The results show that Biomass Monitor can directly obtain reliable amount of viable biomass in real-time during the fermentation process, and effectively avoid the interference of taking samples. This technology meets Process Analytical Technology (PAT) requirements, and it can be a useful tool combined with other data for the development, optimization, monitoring and control in fermentation processes.
