Abstract Lactoferrin is a key component of the mammalian immune defense system. It shows a multifunction involving in iron regulation, broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-tumor activity and immunologic enhancement. But its potential nutritional and therapeutic applications have been limited due to the high cost for extraction and purification of functional lactoferrin from milk. Recombinant expression would be a feasible approach to produce active lactoferrin in large scale. The advances of lactoferrin recombinant expression in E. coli, yeast, insect, plant and mammalian cells were reviewed.
