Advances in Phytoremediation and Genetic Modification of Plants for Enviromental Clean-up |
|
|
Abstract Environmental pollution is a growing global problem. Conventional approaches for clean-up of contaminated sites are not only costly and low efficient but also cause other damage to the environment. Phytoremediation has gained more importance in recent times as an alternative technology for environmental restoration. In this review, five types of phytoremediation strategies including phytoextraction, phytodegradation, phytovolatilization, phytofiltration, and phytostabalization are summarized. In addition, recent progresses in development of transgenic plants with enhanced potential for remediation are reviewed.
